The defining fact of a Columbus backyard is clay. Franklin County sits on glacial till, and that heavy clay drains slowly, holds water against the underside of a slab, heaves when it freezes, and shrinks away from the concrete during a dry late summer. A patio poured straight onto it rides that movement until something cracks. So we don't pour straight onto it — we excavate, compact the subgrade, and build a compacted stone base that drains and stays put.

Water is the other half of the design. Central Ohio storms drop serious rain fast, and the number one patio mistake we correct is pitch toward the house — a slab quietly delivering every storm to the foundation, then icing over at the back door in December. Our patios fall away from the structure at a steady grade, and we route downspouts before the pour, because a gutter dumping under a patio corner will sink it, clay being clay.

One more local reality: shade. Mature trees in Clintonville, Upper Arlington, and Bexley keep north-facing patios damp, and damp concrete grows algae and gets slick. Finish texture and sealer choice account for that, and we'll tell you when your yard calls for more grip.

Broom finish is the honest workhorse — clean, grippy in rain, easiest on the budget, and it ages gracefully. Most patios we pour are broom-finished, and nobody regrets it.

Stamped Concrete gets you slate, flagstone, or brick looks in a continuous slab, with integral color and a sealed surface. It's popular in Dublin and New Albany yards, and around here it beats pavers on one specific point: no joints for Ohio's freeze-thaw to heave out of level.

Exposed aggregate trades smoothness for texture and serious traction — a good call for pool surrounds and shaded, damp corners. Colored broom finish splits the difference, warming up the standard gray without the stamped price.

Settling next to the house is the classic. Backfill around a foundation stays looser than undisturbed ground for decades, so a patio poured on it without real compaction sinks toward the house — and then drains toward it. We compact accordingly, and grade the slab away regardless.

Heaving comes with the clay. Saturated ground freezes, expands, and lifts a corner out of plane; the fix is built in ahead of time with base drainage and proper depth. Downspout undermining is its own category — one gutter outlet under a slab edge will carve a void in two seasons.

Shade-side slickness rounds it out. North-facing and tree-covered patios in the older neighborhoods grow a film by June, and texture plus the right sealer keeps them walkable.
